In a nail-biter of an election, former Grovetown Council Member Ceretta Smith edged out Jacqueline Rivera-Player by 35 votes.

The final tally after all Grovetown precincts reported and early votes tallied was 466 to 431, giving Smith the edge.

Smith says that she knew turnout for the election would be low and says that she is blessed that her supporters came out and helped her secure a win.

Voter turnout was just under 11% even with the presidential primaries on ballot, as well as the highly publicized runoff for the District 125 Georgia House race.

“First, I thank God. My work here is not finished, and I am excited and ready to help make Grovetown an even better place to live, work and play,” Smith said.

Smith served a three-year term on the Grovetown City Council before running for mayor last year and losing to incumbent Gary Jones.
