Watching her children draw on the sidewalk with chalk is an activity Saren Bright misses.

“We don’t have any sidewalks,” said Bright of her North Augusta neighborhood.

So, she’s talked with her neighbors and said she’s gotten permission from the city for the first Chalk It Up! Block Party from 8 a.m. to noon June 5 at the 600 block of Pershing Street.

The neighborhood is tucked away in a corner of the town and is an offshoot of Alta Vista Road. The street will be blocked at Alta Vista to provide a safe place for the children to draw and play.

Without any sidewalks, the road provides a huge, open canvas, she said, and she hopes others will join with her and her children for the event.

The event isn’t just for children, said Bright who hopes the adults bringing the children to the block party is welcome to pick up some pieces of chalk and join in the fun. Bright said she will be.

“It’s a stress reliever,” she said of chalk art. “I really enjoy doing it.”

The event isn’t about creating masterpieces, but about enjoying the out-of-doors and having fun.

She said she’s gotten good feedback from those she’s shared her idea with, and she wants to do something positive after the tough year people have just come through.

Besides the chalk drawing, children can blow bubbles or jump rope. She hopes to have some snacks on hand too.

She has no idea how many people will come to the event, so she’s set up an Instagram page to connect with others. Find Bright @chalkitup2021 or text “free” to (803) 226-6751 for more information.
