Augusta Metro Chamber’s Sept. 29 Member Economic Luncheon: From Pandemic to Sansdemic

The September edition of this series, multiple panelists will discuss workforce issues in Augusta related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This program will focus on opportunities to expand the labor market with more ready-to-work entry level engagement, upskilling the underemployed and earlier intervention at the K-12 level. It will also provide insight on the economic costs to our region of underemployment and unemployment,” according to the event’s website.

During this moderated panel discussion, Cal Wray of the Augusta Economic Development Authority will discuss the latest on our region’s workforce demographics, particularly the extent of the idle or non-participating workforce.

Dr. Jermaine Whirl, president of Augusta Technical College, will talk about programs and opportunities that provide training, credentials and education at the high school and post-secondary levels, as well as “up-skilling” opportunities. He will also speak on programs designed to improve the entry level worker experience thus creating better worker retention.

Brittany Burnett, president of the United Way of the CSRA will offer insight on the economic costs associated with meeting the needs of the underemployed and unemployed populations.

Mary Hayes of WorkBay will share lessons learned at the national level on the behaviors and attitudes of entry level job-seekers and how to improve resources at the local level to engage potential workers with greater success and create better employer/employee satisfaction.

The panel will be moderated by Tom Blanchard, president of Blanchard and Calhoun Real Estate Co.

Columbia County Chamber’s Annual Golf Tournament Coming Up

The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce is ramping up advertising for its 17th annual golf tournament, sponsored by Classic Collision.

The tournament is Oct. 18 at West Lake Country Club. Both morning and afternoon tee times are still available. A team of four players costs $1,100.

Sponsorship costs are as follows: Premier Sponsor, $2,500; Corporate Sponsor, $2,000; Driving Range Sponsor, $1,500; Hole Sponsor, $400; Volunteer Shirt Sponsor, $1,000; Player Gift Sponsor, $2000.

2021 Women in Business Signature Event Announced by Augusta Metro Chamber

The Augusta Metro Chamber has announced that Tuesday, Nov. 16 at Crown Plaza North Augusta will be their Women in Business Signature Event with Teresa MacCartney, acting Chancellor of the University of Georgia.

MacCartney became acting chancellor of the University System of Georgia on July 1, 2021. She oversees 26 public colleges and universities with a $9.8 billion annual budget, 48,000 faculty and staff and more than 341,000 students. The Georgia Public Library System and the Georgia Archives are also part of the University System, which has been recognized nationally for its efforts in cost savings and student attainment.
