The misdemeanor battery charge against Kasey Brooks has been dismissed after she completed a pretrial diversion program.
Augusta Circuit District Attorney Jared Williams announced Thursday that Brooks had successfully completed the program, which included anger management and conflict resolution training.
Brooks was charged with battery in a September 2021 attack on June Barrow, a daycare worker at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Brooks said video showed Barrow abusing her two-year-old nonverbal son at the church Mother’s Day Out program, but police declined to prosecute Barrow.
Pretrial diversion is customary for misdemeanors when a defendant has no criminal history, Williams said.
In the days that followed the attack, Barrow filed suit against Brooks to recoup medical expenses and damages for alleged injuries. Earlier this month, Brooks sued Barrow and the church over alleged harms to her son.
Williams said neither woman’s behavior was appropriate.
“Ms. Barrow’s actions on Aug. 31, 2021, regarding Ms. Brooks’ child were unacceptable. Punishing Ms. Barrow through vigilante justice on Sept. 1, 2021, was also unacceptable. Neither action has any place in civilized society. To avoid further prosecution, both parties are expected to move forward conducting themselves with the decorum of model community members,” he said.
