Charley’s Philly Steaks takes the bottom in health scores

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants, pools or hotels received a failing score from inspections conducted on Oct. 6–12.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was an 83 earned by Charley’s Philly Steaks in the Augusta Mall, located at 3450 Wrightsboro Road, in Augusta.

During the inspection, the inspector noticed required paperwork missing, which resulted in an eight-point deduction.

“Observed no Serv Safe certification posted,” the report stated. “Observed no employee reporting agreements. Repeat violation.”

The inspector also reported seeing the establishment’s previous health inspection score was not displayed, resulting in a point being docked from the health score.

Another point was deducted from the health score for the inspector finding loose/broken ceiling corners where lights are located in the back prep area.

“Observed loose/broken ceiling covers where lights are located in back prep area. Repeat violation,” the report stated. 

The second lowest score of the week was an 85 given to a Captain D’s, located at 1645 Gordon Highway, in Augusta.

The inspector deducted four points for noticing bacteria in the kitchen.

“Observed black buildup inside ice container in cashier’s area. Observed dishes stored clean with residue,” the report stated. “Observed shelves with residue holding dishes.”

During the inspection, the inspector deducted four more points for finding cleaning supplies stored on the same shelves as clean dishes.

“Observed degreasers stored on shelves holding clean dishes,” the report stated. “Do not store toxic substances next to food contact surfaces.”

The inspector deducted another point for the most recent health inspection score not being posted.

“Observed most recent food inspection report not posted,” the report stated. “Have most recent food inspection report posted.”

The inspector also deducted another point for seeing clean dishes stacked wet.

“Observed wet nesting of stacked clean dishes,” the report stated. “Allow dishes to properly air dry before stacking.”

Following the Captain D’s inspection, the third lowest score of the week was an 86 given to the Taco Cat, located at 990 Broad St., in Augusta.

The inspector deducted nine points for noticing food improperly stored.

“Observed raw chicken stored above raw seafood in walk-in-cooler,” the report stated. “Store food according to minimum cooking temperatures to prevent contamination.”

During the inspection, the inspector deducted four more points for finding food past use-by dates.

“Observed buttermilk held past use-by dates in walk-in-cooler,” the report stated. “Discard. Monitor use-by dates and discard when appropriate.”

Another point was docked from the establishment’s health inspection score due to the most recent health inspection score not being posted.

“Observed most recent food inspection report not posted,” the report stated. “Post most recent food inspection report.”
