Child critically injured after falling out of mom’s car on Grovetown interstate

Date: March 11, 2024

A  local boy was critically injured Monday when he was run over by his mother’s car when he opened up the door and fell out on Interstate Exit 190 on Interstate 20 in Grovetown.

The child was being treated Monday night at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital, according to sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris.

The incident happened on the new diverging diamond that opened this month. The child rolled out of the car and may have been unrestrained, Maj. Morris said.

No charges have been filed as the accident investigation continues, the major said. It could be gross negligence on the mother’s part depending on whether the child was allowed to ride without a safety belt, he said.

The investigation is aided by camera footage from the scene that captured the accident. The sheriff’s office is expected to provide an update on Tuesday.
