In its meeting Tuesday evening, the Columbia County Board of Commissions issued a proclamation affirming September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
“The Columbia County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim September 2022 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and encourage everyone to observe and support this cause that so deeply impacts families in every community across our country,” the Columbia County proclamation document read.

According to the proclamation document, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children and one in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed by their 20th birthday. In addition, 46 children per day or 16,790 children per year are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.
“It certainly something worthy of getting a proclamation to raise awareness for this particular disease,” said Columbia County Manager Scott Johnson during the meeting.
The board also approved a rezoning request to accommodate the expansion of Grovetown subdivision Tillery Park, rezoning some 24 acres off Baker Place Road from M-1 light industrial to planned residential development.
This will expand the neighborhood to 871 residential lots along 321 acres.
The next Columbia County Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
