The City of Grovetown is preparing for its annual Fourth of July drive-thru barbecue.

This annual event, which will be held Saturday, July 1, has been around for decades, but Jordon Johnson, the public information officer for the city, said it was switched to a drive-thru format during COVID.

“The reason we haven’t returned to (the format before COVID) is because we have found that the demand for this event is so high, and the attendance is so high, that it’s easier for us and more efficient to feed everybody with the drive-thru method,” Johnson said.

Attendees will drive-thru Liberty Park and be able to pick up a maximum of four plates of barbecue and sides from Fish Eye Grill, Johnson said. Last year the city gave out approximately 3,000 plates.

As for why people should come, Johnson said it’s a way for the city to give back to the community.

“Our community makes Grovetown what it is, and when we can we like to throw events where folks can make memories and have a little something on us, have a little fun on us,” Johnson said.

The Fourth of July drive-thru barbecue will be held Saturday, July 1 at Liberty Park in Grovetown, Johnson said. The event begins at 11 a.m. and will continue until supplies run out.

There will be a slight change to the drive-thru route this year. Traffic will be diverted down Lakeview Drive, said David Carlin, general services director. The route will be posted on the City of Grovetown and Grovetown Leisure and Recreation Facebook page.

The drive-thru barbecue isn’t the only event the City of Grovetown is holding this summer. On Saturday, June 17 will be the annual Summer Jam from noon to 6 p.m. at Liberty Park. This free event will have food, games, vendors and more for kids to enjoy.
