The final day of Georgia candidate qualifying ended with a few surprises from formerly announced candidates.

Former Richmond County Chief Deputy Pat Clayton has elected not to run for Columbia County sheriff against longtime Sheriff Clay Whittle.

Clayton had not qualified as a Republican or Independent for the post against Whittle, a Republican.

Gloria Frazier, the Hephzibah Democrat who has represented the House District 126 since 2007, also did not qualify this week. Instead, retired IT manager L.C. Myles became the only Democrat to qualify to run for the seat.

Myles will face former Frazier opponent, Republican William Harris for the House seat in November.

In another last-day entry, former state House District 129 Democratic candidate Scott Cambers qualified Friday to run again against Rep. Karlton Howard, D-Augusta.
