Col. Calvin Chew has been promoted to chief deputy of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office as Pat Clayton heads for retirement and an expected run for Columbia County Sheriff.

The promotion was announced Wednesday on the agency’s website and Facebook page along with the promotion of Lateisha A. Mosquera to Chief of Staff. She was previously the director of Criminal Intelligence and the Records Bureau. The position of Chief of Staff appears to be a newly-created position not currently held by anyone at the agency, according to the sheriff’s office website.

Chew has been with the sheriff’s office for many years and started his law enforcement career in 1991, according to his LinkedIn page. He has a bachelors’ degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from the University of Maryland, graduating in 1988. He also has training from the FBI National Academy.

“He has a great amount of experience and he will be a great replacement,” Clayton said.

Clayton is leaving at the end of the year and has previously hinted on his run for Columbia County sheriff after he leaves his number 2 position with Richmond County. He resides in Columbia County and has talked before about his desire to work where he lives. If he runs, Clayton will be looking to unseat Sheriff Clay Whittle, who has announced his intention to seek re-election.
