The Columbia County Board of Commissioners is looking to appoint a member to the Fort Gordon Regional Growth Management Plan Implementation Group.

During the Management and Internal Services Committee meeting on Tuesday, April 11, County Manager Scott Johnson told committee members the county received a request to appoint a commissioner to the group.

“We have spoken with District 4 Commissioner Alison Couch, the majority of the fort is in her district, and she has agreed to serve and offer an alternate of deputy county manager Glenn Kennedy to serve on that plan implementation group.”

Andy Crosson, the executive director for the Central Savannah River Area Regional Commission, said the commission recently completed a growth management implementation plan for Fort Gordon. The plan was an analysis of the transportation and socio-demographic needs in the CSRA area to support the continued growth of Fort Gordon.

“One of the recommendations was instead of this being one of the plans that is put in the shelf, we would have a group that meets on a quarterly or semi-annual basis to talk about what’s going on in the area and how the communities can work with the fort and the fort can work with the community,” Crosson said.

Crosson said the commission asked Columbia, Richmond and Aiken counties to have individuals sit on the group, along with representatives from Fort Gordon and the Alliance for Fort Gordon. The meetings are expected to begin either in May or over the summer.

Committee members approved moving the item to the agenda to be presented to the Board of Commissioners.
