The Columbia County Board of Commissioners approved the second reading of an ordinance that will affect the location of tattoo parlors.

Ordinance 23-03 amends the allowed uses and use provisions for tattoo parlors and states there must be a mile separating them when going from door-to-door. District 1 Commissioner Connie Melear was the driving force behind the ordinance.

“We had several applications come in at once that had to do with tattoo parlors and those businesses, and in order to keep them from being on top of each other, we decided to come up with an ordinance to spread them out some,” Melear said. “The current ordinance that we just talked about tonight is going to make them have a one mile spread between the businesses.”

Commissioners took 120 days to work on the ordinance, and Melear said she was happy with the end result.

“We were very thoughtful about it,” Melear said. “We don’t want to take away anybody’s opportunity to have business or make money, it’s a capitalist society for sure, but we want to be sure we do the right thing for everybody, and this will make them all more successful in the end.”

Commissioners also approved a major PUD (Planned Unit Development) revision for a residence on Champions Circle to allow for a pool. A rezoning from R-A (Residential Agricultural) to S-1 (Special) for 5585 White Oak Road for a dog training facility was approved. Also approved was a request for variance to List of lot & structure requirements for 4036 Gateway Boulevard for a subdivision of land.a
