The Petersburg Racquet Club will have a new owner.

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners approved an agreement of purchase and sale for the property during the meeting on Tuesday, April 18 for $1.5 million from Craig Jones.

“Petersburg Racquet Club has a long, rich history of tennis in Columbia County, and the county is excited about the future of this purchase,” said County Manager Scott Johnson in a news release from the county. “PRC will become part of the county’s Community Services Division under Parks, Recreation, and Events and will be open for public play.”

The staff is working on the purchase of the property and discussions are continuing about how to handle memberships as the county moves forward. The public will be notified of potential membership opportunities when they are determined.

The county has made the decision to close the pool area after evaluating the cost to repair, maintain and operate it, according to the news release. The area will be repurposed for pickle ball courts due to a rise in popularity for the sport and a growing demand in the county.

According to a post on the Petersburg Racquet Club Facebook, the club will become part of the Columbia County Parks and Recreation System on May 1.

“For tennis players, parents of juniors or future players, we feel this is an ideal growth situation. The county will be able to provide many opportunities that we, as small business owners, could not. The pool and pool membership is not part of the plan going forward. We will provide more information regarding procedures as of May 1st, especially for those who prepaid for the year.”

Petersburg Racquet Club is located at 421 The Pass.
