The Columbia County Board of Commissioners approved variances for the proposed drive-thru Chick-fil-A off Exit 194 during the meeting on Tuesday, July 17.

The Chick-fil-A, which will be at the former Steak n’ Shake location, was seeking variances to reduce the setback to 10 feet from the property line along Jimmie Dyess and 85 feet along Belair Frontage Road and a variance to allow the proposed drive-thru at the location.

Deputy County Manager Matt Schlachter said the setback variances will allow for the construction of a roof structure and sign boards and message boards for ordering at the drive-thru.

“The other one is the variance to allow the drive-thru to be on the road side of the building,” Schlachter said. “Code does not allow a drive-thru to actually be adjacent to the road, but as you can see on this parcel here, all three sides of this parcel are roads, so there is nowhere to put a drive-thru and meet code. So, the variance would allow a drive-thru…no dine in though, just drive-thru and some outdoor seating.”

Commissioners unanimously approved the variance requests.
