The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will hold the first reading of the proposed data center ordinance during the meeting on Tuesday.

The Columbia County Planning Commission voted to recommend approval for the data zoning draft at its meeting on Nov. 6. As The Augusta Press previously reported, Planning director Will Butler outlined the stipulations of the ordinance update, drafted at the request of the Board of Commissioners (BOC), that included a 70 decibel noise limit and buffers of 500 feet on all sides from residential properties, 250 feet from all other roads, (though these may be reduced by half if a developer installs a berm, and provides a study sufficiently showing that the facility would not be visible to nearby properties).

There was also an update to the ordinance regarding the use of generators. It was also noted that the ordinance would apply to future data centers, but not the one that is currently proposed for Appling.

Multiple community members spoke up regarding the ordinance at the Planning Commission meeting.
