The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will hear a rezoning request for a West Lake property that has become controversial during the meeting on Tuesday.

Sandip Patel has requested that his property on Evans to Locks Road be rezoned from R-2 to R-1. On the property is a 14,624-square foot home and a brick-finished wall surrounding it that reaches up to nine feet at its highest point. Earlier this month the Columbia County Planning Commission approved the rezoning request.

Staff is recommending approval with two conditions, according to the agenda document. Those conditions are that the wall needs to be reduced to a maximum height of eight feet from the finished grade on all side. The second is that any encroachments into the adjacent property need to be remedied or an agreement needs to be made with that property owner. Both conditions need to be met within 60 days of the Board of Commissioners approval.

The vendors fees for the Evans Market will be discussed at the upcoming Columbia County Board of Commissioners meeting. At the recent Community and Emergency Services meeting, Community Services Director John Luton said there is a desire among vendors to be under the pavilion, but a limited number of spots.

“We needed a way to separate how you’re under the pavilion and who goes out into the field,” Luton said during the committee meeting. “What staff came up with is there is going to be an opportunity to become a vendor season pass and if you basically commit to that upfront cost for the whole season, you get to select your spot and that’s locked in for the year. If you want to guarantee your sport under the pavilion, we’re giving you that opportunity. Otherwise, you can go week to week, and you may get a spot under there and you may not.”

The fees can be found here.

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at the Evans Government Center complex. To view the full agenda, visit columbiacountyga.gov.
