Columbia County Board of Commissioners to meet Tuesday, Board of Elections to meet Friday

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will discuss several rezonings at the meeting on Tuesday.

A rezoning from R-A (Residential Agricultural) to S-1 (Special) for 7131 Bill Dorn Road for an outdoor target archery range is on the agenda. According to the agenda document, staff is recommending approval with the following conditions.:

  • Targets shall not be placed within 50 feet of property lines.
  • Targets shall not be oriented towards adjacent properties, whether developed or undeveloped, unless the targets are at least 75 feet from the property line. In all other cases, shooting lanes must parallel the property
    lines or be oriented towards the interior of the site.
  • A solid fence with a minimum height of 8 feet shall be installed along the eastern property line parallel to the proposed target range location. The fence must be continuous for the entirety of the range from the shooting line to a point 75 yards from the shooting line. No targets shall be located on this range in areas not parallel to the fence. The remainder of the east property line shall have a natural buffer as proposed by the applicant.
  • The privacy fence in condition 3 and the proposed natural buffer must be installed prior to the range being
    reopened.
  • The ranges shall be utilized only during daylight hours. No artificial lighting on the site is permitted

A major S-1 (Special) revision for 2221 Indigo Hall Drive, 2200 Indigo Hall Drive and 2000 Indigo Hall Drive to revise uses and layouts for an independent living community is on the agenda. According to the agenda document, the plan is to expand Thrive Senior Living Community. Staff is recommending approval with the condition of a downstream analysis of stormwater runoff will be required to determine no adverse impact to properties downstream.

A conditional use for retail package sale of distilled spirits for off-premise consumption

and a rezoning from C-C (Community Commercial) to C-2 (General Commercial) for 102 South Belair Road, currently zoned C-2 (General Commercial), and a portion of 4730 Columbia Road, currently zoned C-C (Community Commercial), will go before commissioners. 

According to the agenda document, several community members spoke out against the rezoning, stating concerns about a liquor store being built close to their neighborhood and adding in that there are three liquor stores within two miles and 20 within 10 miles.

Staff is recommending approval of the conditional use for the retail package store for the property at 102 South Old Belair Road, but disapproval of the request for a rezoning from C-C (Community Commercial) to C-2 (General Commercial) for the part of the property at 4730 Columbia Road.

The Columbia County Board of Elections will meet on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Board of Elections warehouse (205 Range Road building L) Appling for the election results. The Board of Elections will meet on Friday, May 24 at 6 p.m. at the warehouse to certify the results of the May 21 election and address any other business as needed.
