The Columbia County Board of Elections received an update the upcoming Nov. 4 election.

Board members approved a resolution to issue a call for a special election for House Bill 783, which proposes to raise the Columbia County Board of Education homestead exemption from $2,000 to $10,000.

“It will mirror the same thing that the county did a month ago toward their question. It’s basically the identical question, just different authorities,” said Nancy Gay, executive Director for the Columbia County Board of Elections, told board members.

Advanced voting information

Board members approved advanced voting hours for the November election. Advanced in-person voting will take place Monday through Friday, Oct. 14-31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the G3 building in Evans and the former Euchee Creek Library. There will be Saturday voting on Oct. 18 and Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both locations. Election day will be Nov. 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at regular voting precincts.

The absentee by mail application period is Aug. 18-24.

Harlem and Grovetown elections

Gay also provided an update on the upcoming elections for the cities of Grovetown and Harlem, which will also take place in November.

Grovetown has two council seats up for re-elections. Those interested in running can qualify Aug. 18-20 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Grovetown City Hall. The qualifying fee is $150, Gay said.

Harlem has two city council seats and the mayor seat up for re-election. Those interested in running can qualify from Aug. 18-20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Harlem City Hall. The qualifying fees are $144 for mayor and $108 for city council, Gay said.

Election day will be Nov. 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at regular voting precincts.
