The Columbia County Board of Commissioners approved to rezone a little over 100 acres along Clanton Road and Old Pearre Place from residential agricultural to planned residential development at its meeting Tuesday.
The previous plan for the development included over 200 single-family homes but was changed. The plan now approved consists of 165 homes. Developers also increased the setbacks from 7 and half feet to 10 feet.
Beth Connell, an adjacent property owner, did have some concerns about the proposed development, but was not against the development being approved.
“Our requests originally that this land be kept for future development as RA or R1, for larger lots. Keith Lawrence has worked with us; he has tried to address concerns; and it is a strange position to be in because I am normally opposed to any development, but I think also ashamed as a resident that we are kind of are trying to look at what we have versus the fact, if this doesn’t go through, alternatives could be much worse,” Connell said during the meeting.

The rezoning was approved by a motion of 3 to 2.
Commissioners also approved a major revision request by Redeemer Presbyterian Church at 2540 William Few Pkwy. The church aims to build a two-story, 30,000 square foot school building on its property.
The subject property is located on the north side of William Few Parkway and the west side of Clanton road and is currently zoned S-1.
The commission approved the project under the conditions that the applicant shall be responsible for improvements to Clanton Road and/or William Few Parkway to serve additional traffic loading as deemed necessary based on proposed site improvements according to the Columbia County staff recommendation sheet.
