Columbia County commissioners are going to allow a building to exceed height restrictions by 33 feet after Army and fire officials said they didn’t have a problem with it.
The building is part of a huge office complex being built just outside Gate 6 in the 3100 block of Gordon Highway. Gate 6 is the new entrance to Fort Gordon that mainly serves National Security Administration workers and military intelligence soldiers who staff the post’s secretive spying agency and other intelligence-gathering facilities around the Whitelaw campus.
Zoning laws prohibit buildings taller than 55 feet in that area, but the developer of the Gate 6 Center asked for the tallest building to be 88 feet. The commissioners approved the request Tuesday night during a county commission meeting.

Commissioners also approved the construction of a storage building at 5462 Columbia Road near the county’s Patriot Park.
Commissioners also waived current buffer restrictions for a light industrial-use property and gave the owner permission to build closer to property lines. The property is at 670 South Old Belair Road, which is near the New Hope Worship Center and just south of the Food Lion grocery story and Family Dollar store at the intersection of Belair and Old Belair roads.
Commissioners also approved new street lights for a new section of the Crawford Creek South subdivision and the Johns Landing subdivision.
