Earlier this month, the Columbia County Planning Commission had a split vote 2-2 to approve a request to rezone land at 4459 Wrightsboro Rd. from M-1 (light industrial) to T-R (townhouse-residential).
On Tuesday, June 15, the Columbia County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to reject the rezoning request.
The four commissioners present had virtually no discussion on the matter. The four who attended were Donald Skinner Jr., Chairman Doug Duncan, Gary Richardson and Dewey Galeas. Connie Melear was not present for the meeting.
The plan called for the mostly undeveloped 10 acres of land to be rezoned from light industrial, which might constitute warehouse space or an auto shop, for example, to townhomes, with a cap of 78. Those numbers are from a conceptual plan from BDM Development in Evans and engineering firm Southern Civil Solutions in Martinez.

In that plan, BDM Development cited “market demands” for housing for the request.
The 2-2 split vote in the planning commission with a definitive 4-0 motion to reject the zoning did not elicit a response during the public comments and participation portion of the meeting.
Other business in the meeting included hearing from long-time Columbia County resident Annie Anderson about cleaning up a ditch on her property. Board members requested more paperwork from her.
Commissioners also voted against the conditional use of a daycare at a property located at 208 Flowing Wells Rd., following comments from Columbia County residents property owner Tommy McBride and Mushanda Ray, the daycare owner who is looking to expand.
