An impaired driver was arrested for vehicular homicide after Thursday night’s fatality on westbound I-20 in Columbia County.

Michael Gene Glenn, 42, of Washington, Ga., was charged with homicide by vehicle, DUI and following too closely in the death of Mardrez Jackson, also of Washington. The wreck happened on westbound I-20 near the Appling-Harlem interchange.

Authorities say the victim was a rear passenger in a 2016 Honda Accord around 9:30 p.m. Thursday when the suspect didn’t slow down for stalled traffic. He rammed into the back of another vehicle with his 2010 Nissan Pathfinder.

“The impact force pushed the Honda into the North shoulder and caused the Nissan to roll onto its driver’s side, also striking the rear of the Chevrolet and pushing it onto the North shoulder,” sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said. “There are four occupants from the Honda that were transported to Doctors. The left rear passenger was pronounced deceased at the hospital.”

According to Morris, the suspect was impaired and claimed he was “looking down at his radio” and didn’t see the traffic slowing down before the wreck. Glenn was booked into the Columbia County Detention Center.
