Columbia County has a new events venue.

A ribbon cutting was held on Tuesday, April 2 for The Market, which is located next to the Columbia County Performing Arts Center. During the event, County Chairman Doug Duncan said The Market was approved in the 2017 general obligation bond and work started on March 27, 2023.

“It’s a great addition to the downtown area as we continue to work to have a more functional downtown area to bring folks in, there’s going to be a lot of events that could be had here hopefully,” Duncan said.

Columbia County Director of Community Services John Luton told the crowd that there are plans to hold many events at the new facility.

“We see this being a destination for wedding receptions, corporate events, reunions, as well as some of our internal events. The first one we have coming up, we’re actually unofficially calling it our grand opening of this is on April 20.”

The April 20 event is the first Evans Market of the season, which will have over 100 vendors, Luton said.

“Evans Market started over at Memorial Park, which is behind the library,” said Janet Wheatley, programs and events manager for Columbia County. “We moved it over to the plaza area for the past couple of years. We’ve grown it from there. We’ve just been waiting on this space, and we’ve been slowly moving closer and closer and now we’re here. We’re just excited to open the Evans Market on April 20.”

The Market, Wheatley said it’s a good place for small businesses to come and show their products. She added there will also be other events and programs at the facility.

“It’s just a great gathering place in downtown Evans,” Wheatley said.
