Dignitaries and residents gathered at the Columbia County Performing Arts Center on Thursday night to get a robust update on how the county’s doing and where it’s headed.

The 13th annual State of the Community program kicked off at 6:30 p.m., after its business expo.

This year the event, coordinated by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, was free and open to the public. Highlights included presentations from Col. Reginald Evans, Garrison Commander of Fort Gordon, on upcoming changes with the Cyber Center of Excellence and the renaming of Fort Gordon to Fort Eisenhower, school superintendent Steven Flynt on the school district’s Academic Curriculum for Excellence (ACE), Grovetown city administrator Elaine Matthews on that city’s depot project, Harlem city manager Debra Moore on the city’s multi-park project, and Columbia County manager Scott Johnson on the county’s SPLOST projects.

The Augusta Press will have more comprehensive coverage of the event Saturday.
