The Columbia County Management and Internal Services Committee discussed an agreement with the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon during its meeting on Tuesday, July 11.

service agreement with CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon for $25,000 was discussed. County Manager Scott Johnson said this agreement has been done for years.

“We did budget for this and our budget went into effect July 1,” Johnson said. ‘The total amount is $25,000 and the staff recommends approval for the service agreement with the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon.”

The CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon was created in 2003 as a non-profit whose primary purpose was to “create awareness in the community of the threat of base closure and the potential economic impact should Ft Gordon be downsized or closed,” according to the website.

When the Base Realignment and Closure Commission Report became law in 2005, Fort Gordon was spared from the latest round of base realignment and closure, according to the CSRA Alliance website.

“The primary reason Fort Gordon survived was its military value – the ability to efficiently and effectively perform its assigned missions and its potential to support new missions,” the website said. “Other major contributing factors, however, were the strong community support for our service members and their families and the outstanding quality of life enjoyed by area residents.”

Committee members also discussed a proclamation recognizing the Augusta Christian Schools cheer, boys basketball and baseball teams for winning state titles during the 2022-2023 school year.

“As you know we recognized the Harlem High School state championship baseball team. Augusta Christian also did well last year taking home the state titles in boys basketball, baseball and cheer,” Johnson said.

Committee members approved moving both the agreement and proclamation to the consent agenda for the full Columbia County Board of Commissioners at the July 18 meeting.

The Columbia County Development and Planning Services Committee discussed entering into a professional services agreement with Cranston, LLC for the construction of pickleball courts at the Columbia County Racquet Club for $59,680.

“As you know we’ve designated an area there to build some courts. I know that the agenda says 11, we’re still in the planning phase, we’re hoping to hit 10 or 11 courts there,” said Steven Prather, director of Facilities Design and Construction. “These will be lit, these will be fenced, nice brand new courts, they’ll have accessibility as well.”

Committee members approved moving the item to the consent agenda for the full Board of Commissioners.

An alcoholic beverage license for Ridge Road Bait and Tackle LLC was moved to the debate agenda for the full Board of Commissioners. The business, located at 6539 Washington Road, was looking to sell beer, wine and distilled spirits for consumption on the premise and beer and wine for off premise consumption.

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will meet Tuesday, July 18 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at the Evans Government Center. The agenda will be available at columbiacountyga.gov.
