Dr. Steven Flynt will become Columbia County school superintendent later this year.
The Columbia County School Board voted Thursday to name Flynt to fill the top position when current Superintendent Sandra Carraway retires at the end of the school year.
Flynt is currently an associate superintendent of Gwinnett County schools. He earned an associate of arts in education at Young Harris College, a bachelor’s degree in biology from Lees-McRae College, a master’s in science education from Piedmont College and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Georgia.

The board chose Flynt over two other finalists who are both already with Columbia County schools, associate superintendents Penny Jackson and Michele Sherman.
Flynt accepted the superintendent position and promised to build on his soon to-be-predecessor’s successful policies.
“Dr. Carraway is amazing,” Flynt said. “To be able to follow such a leader…is humbling to me.”
The reins of leadership will be officially turned over to Flynt when Carraway retires on June 30th.
