Columbia County students will return to school next week.
In a letter sent out by the district Friday afternoon, it said employees will return on Tuesday, Oct. 8, if it is safe to do so, and students will return on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Students will attend classes that Wednesday and on Thursday, Oct. 10 before starting fall break on Friday, Oct. 11. The fall break will continue on Monday, Oct. 14 for the Columbus Day holiday.
“We will reach out directly to specific communities, and share updates with our local news media, should any schools experience prolonged power outages that would affect these plans,” said Superintendent Dr. Steven Flynt in the letter.
“In the Columbia County School District, we care about our students, our employees, and this community and are committed to doing our very best during this difficult time. We know there will be challenges next week as we return to school, but we will be ready as we have the best team around… a team that is dedicated in its commitment to our students. As part of that commitment, we look forward to working with our families and community to do what is best, and what is needed, for our children. Please continue to stay safe and remain diligent in ensuring the safety and well-being of your families, loved ones, and those who may be in need.”
McDuffie County School District
On Friday, Oct. 4, McDuffie County School District announced that students will not return on Monday, Oct. 7, but did not give a possible return date.
“As we continue to deal with the impacts of Hurricane Helene, many McDuffie County residents, including more than half of system employees, are still without power. Also, many roads remain impassable throughout the county. We want to get our students back to learning as soon as possible; however, due to these factors, we will not be able to return to school on Monday, Oct. 7. We will continue to assess the situation daily and announce changes when we are able,” said a statement from the school district.
Richmond County School District
On Thursday, Oct. 3, Richmond County School System announced that students will return on Oct. 16.
Aiken Technical College
Aiken Tech will switch to temporary remote operations starting Monday, Oct. 7, until power and systems are restored on the campus. Students should check their email and Blackboard for information from instructors.
