The request from suspended Augusta Commissioner Sammie Sias has been granted. The Magistrate Judge in U.S. District Court for Southern Georgia’s Augusta office posted his order saying, “the ends of justice served by granting the motion for an extension outweigh the best interests of the public and the defendant in a speedy trial.”
Sias’ attorneys requested the extension in order to review evidence against him in documents and computers files provided by the prosecutors.
The new deadline has been set for Jan. 18, 2022.
