Two people were killed Monday evening following a multi-vehicle crash on Washington Road that began with a high-speed collision involving a Ford Bronco, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene around 5:45 p.m. at Washington Road and Caribe Drive after receiving reports of a crash with injuries.

According to investigators, the driver of a gray Ford Bronco was traveling westbound on Washington Road at a high rate of speed when the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. The Bronco collided head-on with a gray Ford Focus, causing the Focus to overturn and land on a red Kia Forte that was traveling in the adjacent lane.

The Sheriff’s Office said further investigation revealed the Ford Bronco had been involved in an earlier crash at the intersection of Bobby Jones Expressway and Washington Road just prior to the fatal incident.

The driver and passenger of the Ford Focus were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The drivers of the Ford Bronco and the Kia Forte were transported to Doctors Hospital with injuries. The extent of their conditions has not been disclosed.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
