A body was discovered Saturday afternoon near the river along Riverbend Road, prompting an active investigation by local authorities.
According to Lt. James Kelly with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a report around 3:46 p.m. of a possible body floating in the river near Riverfront Drive. Responding units confirmed the body had washed ashore along Riverbend Road.
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and Crime Scene Unit were called to the scene and are currently investigating. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office responded and confirmed the body was a man who had been deceased awhile.
“No ID will be available until a positive ID can be made due to the condition of the body,” Coroner Mark Bowen said in an email.
Officials say more details will be released as they become available.
