Filming of the spy thriller “Agent Game” is scheduled to wrap up on Friday with the final action sequences being shot in Columbia County.
While most of Augusta knew Mel Gibson was in town March 29 shooting a movie because he was spotted brandishing a prop gun on Broad Street, the lead role in the film belongs to Dermot Mulroney.
“The script was really cool. I was lucky they called me out of the blue,” said Mulroney, who plays Harris a mid-level agent caught in the center of the intrigue, and things aren’t as they seem. “He has to step up to the plate to get himself out of trouble.”
Mulroney had one lament about Gibson.
“The only sad part is I’m in a movie with Mel Gibson, but I didn’t shoot any scenes with him,” he said.
Mulroney didn’t want to spoil the plot, but he did drop a few important hints.
“I make it to the end credits,” he said.
That’s a plus for his career if there’s a sequel, he said, adding that his characters haven’t always made it to the final scenes.

Mulroney said he enjoyed filming in Augusta. The golf bug bit him while he was here. He spent many mornings on the golf course with fellow actor Jason Isaacs before heading to the set. Even though he was in town during the Masters Tournament, Mulroney said he watched the tournament on TV.
Augusta was the perfect place to film “Agent Game,” he said.
“Augusta had everything we needed to make a movie that takes place in Belgium, in Kosovo, in a couple of other places,” he said. “In a cargo plane, in an airport somewhere in undisclosed Europe next to the woods.”
He was especially impressed with the Sibley Mill and its hydroelectric system, which he learned a lot about during his scenes there.
Mulroney said playing the character was a lot of fun.
His acting career began in 1986 with a made for TV movie called “Sin of Innocence.” Over the years, he’s been in more than 120 films and TV shows. He played Michael O’Neal in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and Nick Mercer in “The Wedding Date,” a film he wasn’t sure was going to be very good, but he said he was pleased with how it turned out.
Other credits include “August: Osage County,” “Young Guns” and “Angels in the Outfield.”
Despite his extensive resume, he’s never been in a war film, the favorite genre of his father.
“Agent Game” should be released in 2022.
