Derrion Reid is coming back to Grovetown — for a signing.
The 5-star high school basketball progress and former Grovetown star and state champion announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) Tuesday afternoon that he is coming back to where it all began for himself Friday to share his next chapter in his basketball career.
Shortly after a standout performance in the Nike Peach Jam at North Augusta back in July, Reid made the choice to head to Prolific Prep School in Northern California as a way to refine his game before heading to college.
The 6-foot-7, 180-pound Augusta-area native has narrowed down his list of 20-plus offers to a trio of close-to-home schools: Alabama, Florida State and Georgia.
Reid helped Grovetown to a Class AAAAAA state championship as a sophomore, as well as back-to-back region 3-AAAAAA crowns. He’s currently ranked as the No. 9 rated player by the ESPN 100 rankings for the Class of 2024. Initially, Reid was going to announce his college choice back in October at the same time as fellow Augusta-area product and EYBL Circuit Team Thad teammate Elijah Crawford who committed and signed to Stanford. Reid postponed that decision, citing a “family situation.”
Aside from his three finalists, Reid received offers from virtually every blue blood college basketball program in the country, including Kansas, Creighton, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia.
Reid has found his way on the Prolific Prep squad, helping the Napa, California prep school to a 14-2 record while playing a national schedule. Reid had a strong finish to the month of November, notching 29 points and eight rebounds in an 83-73 win over Balboa School on Nov. 25.
It was part of a two-game stretch where scored a total of 40 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. That performance netted him Player of the Week honors via The Grind Session, a media group that covers elite prep basketball internationally.
