The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, and one restaurant received a failing score from inspections on Dec. 2-6.
Worst scores in this week’s health inspection
This week’s lowest health inspection score was a 65 earned by Don Pepe Mexican Grill, located at 3450 Wrightsboro Road, Suite 2355, in Augusta.
The inspector noted seeing an employee handwashing sink without paper towels and was not readily accessible to workers, which resulted in a four point reduction.
“Observed the hand washing sink being blocked in the main kitchen,” the report stated.
The inspector also noted observing food being improperly stored and bacteria building up on a drink station, in addition to the most recent health inspection score not being posted.
“Observed buildup around the front food service drink station. Observed black buildup inside and around the bulk ice machine,” the report stated.
Lastly, the inspector noted seeing various foods improperly stored.
“Observed cheese-43 F, pork-42 F, and rice-58 F improperly cold held above 41F,” the report stated. “Observed onions-101F and shrimp-104F improperly held below 135 F.”
The restaurant also showcased the presence of bugs.
“Observed dead and alive roaches throughout the establishment,” the inspector noted. “Consult with a licensed pest control operator to get rid of roaches.”
Following the Don Pepe inspection, the second lowest score of the week was a 72 given to Riverfront Pub and Sports, located at 531 Broad St., in Augusta.
The inspector reported finding several foods held at an improper storage temperature, which resulted in a nine point reduction.
“Observed ground beef in [reach-in-cooler] at 46 F and 43 F. Observed sliced tomatoes at 44 F,” the report stated.
The inspector also noted observing that a “potato food slicer had food built up on it,” which resulted in a four point reduction, and sliced tomatoes and ground beef without prep and discard dates.
The inspector also noted observing chemical bug spray stored on the same shelf as food items and a build up of bacteria on floors around and behind equipment, including the bottom parts of a reach-in-cooler at the bar area.
The third lowest score of the week was a score of 83 given to a Super 8, located at 3026 Washington Road, in Augusta.
From the inspection, the inspector docked two points for noticing soap residue in showers and holes in doors.
“Several had used soap in tub or shower,” the report stated. “Repair holes in doors and walls and sink stands.”
In addition, the inspector noted the hotel needing new mattresses and mattress covers, in addition to a deep cleaning needed underneath chair cushions and replacement of smoke detectors.
“Replace stained mattresses, mattress covers. Replace burned bedspreads,” the report stated. “Deep clean under chair cushions. Make sure smoke detectors are operable in rooms before renting room.”
