Downtown Soul City to host new board game event

Date: May 14, 2024

Downtown Soul City (DSC), a local non-profit, is inviting the community to attend the organization’s first Game Fest – a tabletop gaming event from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.

Dedicated to promoting and marketing retail in downtown Augusta by hosting events and creating community engagement opportunities, DSC is partnering up with Columbia County’s Cardboard Castle Games to provide an enjoyable tabletop gaming day for the entire community.

“When we heard [Cardboard Castle] sometimes has events downtown, we thought it would be a great collaboration,” DSC Director John Porter said. “They want to have a little more presence downtown, and we want to have more of a presence in Evans just to pull people downtown.”

Featuring a vast tabletop game library, Porter said Cardboard Castle will have plenty of games to interest any attendee and will offer varying levels of difficulty.

“They have games for kids, and they have games for adults. It’s really geared towards any age,” he said.

Sponsored by The Kru and Fulcher Hagler LLP, the event will be held at 672 Mullins Colony Drive and feature various tabletop games for $10 a ticket.

Included with each ticket are two entries for a chance to win one of the multiple baskets from DSC merchants and Cardboard Castle Games.

With over $1,000 worth of prize baskets available to win, raffle winners will get to take home board games, gift cards to downtown stores and more.

“The day will be filled with epic board game battles, strategy showdowns and endless fun,” stated a press release from DSC. “Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, there’s a game you can learn about and jump into.”

For those completely new to the tabletop gaming community, Porter said Cardboard Castle Games’ employees will be available to teach anyone how to play and succeed in the available tabletop games.

Similar to past DSC events, Porter said Game Fest will be geared towards families and adult individuals in an effort to be all inclusive and beneficial for the entire Greater Augusta area.

“Augusta has a ton of families and if you’re catering only towards adults then you’re not only excluding other people, but you’re also excluding people who could one day be adults that will live and shop here,” he said. “They are part of the community here too.”

A personal tabletop gaming fan, Porter said he was excited to interact with community members while introducing them to multiple local business owners.

“Getting to know them, playing games with them and having fun with them is all really important,” he said. “It makes the people who own these shops more recognizable and it really makes people realize that these owners are your neighbors.”

A percentage of all board game sales during the event will go towards supporting DSC and its future summer events, such as July’s Camp Soul City.

“By supporting DSC merchants, you are supporting your local community,” Porter said.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online at https://www.downtownsoul.city or in-store at downtown Augusta’s Book Tavern, located at 978 Broad St., and FIELD Botanicals, at 215 12th St.

DSC also offers Downtown VIP community memberships for $4.99 a month for individuals and $9.99 for families. VIP members receive special merchandise at all DSC events, such as a choice of a CardBoard Castle Games T-shirt at this year’s Game Fest.
