Downtown traffic update: Sections of Walton Way, 13th Street closed

13th Street at Telfair in downtown Augusta will remain closed for some time as contractors reconstruct the Augusta Canal bridge and that section of 13th.

Date: October 05, 2023

Road and lane closures and detours will continue in downtown Augusta in construction projects funded by the 1% Transportation Investment Act sales tax and other sources.

Walton Way between James Brown Boulevard and Eighth Street will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Oct. 5, according to the city. A detour will direct traffic to Laney-Walker Boulevard, but motorists are encouraged to avoid the section of Walton Way.

The closure is to complete installation of sidewalks and ramps in that section of Walton Way, Augusta Traffic Engineer John Ussery said. The project is funded by Phase 2 of the Transportation Investment Act.

Lane closures continue in sections of Walton Way between 13th and 15th streets for ongoing utility work.

The 13th Street bridge over the Augusta Canal between Telfair Street and Walker Street near Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School will remain closed through the end of the year. The bridge is being reconstructed and 13th Street overhauled in the TIA-funded project.

The city hadn’t sent a Wednesday traffic update, but work is expected to continue on Greene, Fifth and Sixth streets in projects funded by the sales tax.

Work is ongoing on Greene between Third Street and East Boundary. The westbound lane of Greene toward downtown will be closed between First and Second streets for the next week, according to a prior news release.

Fifth Street between Reynolds and Broad streets will remain closed for the next few weeks, the city said Sept. 27. Motorists can also expect roaming outside lane closures on Fifth between Broad and Greene streets.

On Sixth Street, drivers will encounter outside lane closures on both sides of the street between Greene Street and the Walton Way overpass.
