Ed Lowery publicly announced his candidacy for the Richmond County Board of Education District 6 seat, early Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the Municipal Building.

“Education is important to all of us,” Lowery said. “I feel that we as leaders, as adults, as preachers, as politicians, have let our children down. That’s why so much happening out in the street. But it’s going to be a new day, because we are going to come together and do what’s right about our children.”

Lowery qualified for his candidacy at the Municipal Building Tuesday at 9 a.m. Supporters and members of Lowery’s campaign gathered in the Linda Beazley Room shortly before noon for the kickoff event. Several speakers preceded Lowery’s announcement, including his campaign co-chairman Moses Todd and Pastor Gordon Thomas of Ross Grove Baptist Church.

In his talk declaring his run for election, Lowery named “three P’s” as central to his campaign and his efforts if elected.

“Promote for student success, privatize student learning and partner for progress,” he said.

Lowery, a funeral director and caterer, encouraged partnerships between the school district and the community, such as churches and other organizations like the Augusta Mini-Theatre, where Lowery serves on the board of directors.

He offered condolences to the family of Tyrique Robinson, who took his own life in November after his election to the District 6 seat.

“We had another young man that had great ideas,” Lowery said. “And I want to be able to take some of his thoughts, some of his ideas, being an advocate for those children, being a listening ear for those children, and bring it to the table so that we all can work together and help our children.”

The special election for the Richmond County School Board District 6 seat will be Tuesday, March 21.
