Editorial: A sound verdict and proper sentence

Date: July 31, 2023

Judges generally only earn a spot on the editorial page when they let a criminal off easy to the horror of the community; however, Chief Superior Court Judge James G. Blanchard deserves praise for making sure a monster never sees the light of day again.

This past week, Blanchard sentenced 40 year-old David Wesley Campbell to life plus 100 years in prison after he was convicted of 25 counts of child sexual abuse against two girls. The children were aged 11 and 13 when they fell into the clutches of this demon.

Blanchard clearly understands that pedophiles are sick individuals that cannot be cured of their predilections. They are violent rapists who go after the most vulnerable among us.

Even castration is not a proven remedy to this sickness.

Children who become victims never get over what was done to them, they are stained for life.

Sadly, we live in a time where some people are trying to normalize pedophilia as a mere sexual attraction. People who believe this are as sick as the pedophiles themselves, in our opinion.

Unfortunately, the law does not allow society to put these monsters down like we do with rabid animals.

So, thank you to Judge Blanchard for handing down a maximum sentence and locking this creep up where he belongs, and now let us all hope some appellate court or parole board never finds the key to his cell.
