Editorial: Let’s march!

A man by the name of George Fisher was once a mainstay on radio in Augusta. His voice graced the frequencies of WBBQ, WBIA and WGAC and, in person, he was known as a local version of Cary Grant.

For decades, entire families woke up to the sound of Fisher’s voice telling the news of the day and playing Frank Sinatra and other pop hits. However, the pinnacle of the morning show was when George Fisher would feature a young child on the telephone to “march” everyone out to school.

George Fisher was Columbia County Assistant District Attorney Natalie Paine’s grandfather.

Today, is the first day of school for many across the CSRA, so as a celebration for our new generation and a remembrance of the late, great George Fisher, we have asked his granddaughter to recite the famous “March to School,” and here is what she sent:

“Time to get em,

Slicked and shined,

Buckled and bowed,

Zipped up,

Tuned up,

Tucked in,

Combed out,

look out, be careful cause

Heeeeeeere they come, marching out the door to school!”
