As local radio legend George Fisher used to say, “time to get ‘em buckled and bowed…” The first day of school for kids across the CSRA is upon us.

Parents, teachers and students each have their own responsibilities for making the year a success.

Parents are responsible for establishing a routine for their children, enforcing bedtimes, ensuring homework gets down, keeping up with how their kids are doing–both academically and emotionally– and supporting their children’s teachers.

Teachers are responsible for knowing their subject matter and for understanding how each student learns. Teachers are also responsible for enforcing classroom discipline with a firm but wise hand.

Students may have the greatest responsibilities of all, for they must work hard, even on subjects they find dull. They must respect their teachers, even those they don’t like, and their peers, especially those they don’t like. They must be good stewards of school property and materials. That’s a lot to put on any set of young shoulders.

We have confidence in our Richmond and Columbia county parents, teachers and students, and we anticipate a strong beginning to an outstanding school year.

We hope that the start of school is a fun, challenging and rewarding time for all of our area youngsters!
