Eight schools in the Richmond County School System (RCSS) were recognized as “Math Leaders” for exceptional achievement or growth in mathematics by the Georgia Department of Education.

RCSS joins a total of 624 schools in the state of Georgia to be recognized as Math Leaders.

Schools were awarded based on the number of students achieving the Proficient Learner level or above on the Georgia Milestones mathematics assessments, according to a press release from the RCSS.

“After the state of Georgia implemented new K-12 math standards last school year, our math teachers worked hard to adjust their teaching styles accordingly,” said Malinda Cobb, associate superintendent of Academic Services. “Because of their dedication, these students were able to truly master concepts and achieve in the classroom.”

The RCSS 2023-24 “Math Leaders” are:

  • A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School
  • Belair K-8 School
  • Copeland Elementary School
  • C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet School
  • Freedom Park K-8 School
  • John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School
  • Lamar-Milledge Elementary School
  • Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School

This is the first year that elementary, middle and high schools in Georgia received Math Leader Awards.

“We are honored to be counted among the inaugural group of schools who show notable achievement and growth in mathematics,” Cobb said.
