Aiken County is mourning a sad loss after an elderly Aiken couple died four days apart from injuries suffered in an Oct. 13 traffic collision, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

Charles Sonner, 84, was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:20 p.m. Saturday. Both he and his wife were patients at Anchor Post Acute Care and Rehabilitation Center at the time of their deaths.

The coroner said his office was notified Tuesday that 83-year-old Barbara Sonner had also succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced deceased at 3:22 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Ables, the couple had been injured on Oct. 13 at approximately 4:45 p.m., when Charles Sonner, driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata with Barbara Sonner as a passenger, collided with another vehicle while traveling north on Whiskey Road near Hitchcock Drive Southwest in Aiken. Both were transported by Aiken County EMS to Wellstar MCG Health and were later released to Anchor Post Acute Care and Rehabilitation, where they ultimately died.

The Coroner’s Office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety continue to investigate the crash.
