An elderly Aiken man died of blunt force injuries after crashing his golf cart into a ditch after midnight Saturday, authorities said.

Ronald New, 86, was driving an EZ-GO golf cart west on Powell Pond Road near Scotch Lane around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when the accident occurred, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

Powell Pond Road and Scotch Lane is shown in this daytime picture.

“The golf cart exited the left side of the road, and crashed into a ditch, ejecting the driver,” Ables said in a press release.

New was pronounced deceased on the scene at 1:10 a.m. Saturday from blunt force injuries.  The coroner’s office along with S.C. Highway Patrol are continuing with the investigation.

“Toxicology analysis are pending,” the coroner said in the press release.

New was being remembered online by those who knew him.

“Ronald New, you gonna be missed,” Tommy Morris wrote on Facebook. “This is terrible.”
