Carol Rezelle is excited to finally be able to bring ‘The Witnesses’ to the Enopion Theater Co.’s stage.

“It took a couple of years to write. Last year at Easter, we were supposed to do it. Everything shut down the week we were scheduled to open,” said Rezelle. Performances begin April 16.

Rezelle said she postponed the play a couple of different times and kept up with Zoom rehearsals at various times during the past year. Much of the original cast remained in the show with only a couple opting out because of COVID-19 concerns.

The play is an immersive experience with the actors interacting with the audience members and sitting amongst them in the theater.

“You are outside Pontius Pilate’s judicial hall. One of the witnesses will come and begin right in the lobby,” she said.

“The Witnesses” focuses on the trial of Jesus Christ with Pilate officiating.

An array of witnesses will share their testimony of what Jesus has done.

“There’s Mary Magdalene, Peter, Judas,” said Rezelle. “There are characters that are mentioned in the Bible such as the blind man and the woman by the East Gate and the child who was raised from the dead.”

One figure will not appear in this retelling, however. An actor will not play the role of Jesus.

“He’s on trial, but He’s never brought into the court,” she said.

Enopion’s small theater on Commercial Court in Martinez had limited seating pre-pandemic. Rezelle said it will operate at reduced capacity. “The Witnesses” is scheduled into June with cast and crew under the agreement to add shows into the summer.
