Evans boy, 6, is hit by school bus while driving go-kart

Date: January 10, 2023

An Evans boy was in stable condition Tuesday after being run over by a school bus the day before while riding a go-kart.

The child, identified as 6-year-old Courtney Calvert, was on Grande Park in the River Island neighborhood around 4:30 p.m. Monday when the accident happened, Sheriff’s Maj. Steve Morris said.

“Courtney Calvert was parked in an electric go-kart on the side of the road while the bus, driven by Herbert Smith, was parked on the other side of the street dropping children off from Riverside Elementary,” Maj. Morris said. “For unknown reasons, Courtney reversed the go-kart just as the bus began to pull forward and drove under the bus, causing the driver’s side rear tire to run over him.”

Courtney’s father, Chris Calvert, was on scene and witnessed the accident along with several other witnesses. The child was wearing a helmet, Maj. Morris said.

No charges have been filed. Authorities are continuing to interview witnessed and students on the bus.
