The Evans Knights defeated the Lakeside Panthers 37-29 on Friday, Oct. 15.

Evans’ running back Joe Hampton scored the Knights first touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run with six minutes to go in the first quarter. The kick was no good, and the score was 6-0.

Lakeside answered right after with a 2-yard touchdown run by Temarcus Elam. Kicker Will Hattaway put the Panthers ahead 7-6.

Just before the first quarter ended, Evans struck again with a 75-yard touchdown run from Hampton. Fabian Klawa kicked for the extra point, and the score was 13-7.

Evans started off the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass to KD Dorsey from quarterback Kaleb Jackson – an Albany State University commit. The kick was no good, so the score was 19-7.

With 1:08 to go in the first half, Evans tried but failed to get into the end zone after a fumble by Hampton was recovered by Lakeside and ran down the field into Knights’ territory. Nothing came of the Panthers’ drive, though, missing a field goal heading into the second half.

Evans made the first move in the third quarter, with Klawa nailing a field goal with less than four minutes in the third quarter. The score was 22-7.

Lakeside quarterback Jason Whitaker (9) hands off the ball to running back BJ Grissom (26).

Lakeside answered on a 55-yard touchdown run from Elam. Hattaway kicked for the extra point and the score was 22-14.

With a little more than a minute left in the third quarter, Evans running back Chance Taylor scored a 5-yard touchdown. The Knights went for the 2-point conversion and Hampton scored, furthering the Knights’ lead to 30-14 going into the fourth quarter.

Lakeside started the fourth quarter off with a 24-yard touchdown run from Elam. Elam then ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion, making the score 30-22.

Evans scored their last touchdown of the night on a 3-yard touchdown run from DJ Walton. Klawa kicked for the extra point once more and made the score 37-22.

As a last ditch effort, the Panthers took advantage of a late game Evans’ fumble, and Max Holt scored a touchdown on the recovery in the endzone. The extra point by Hattaway made the score 37-29.

Evans will travel to Heritage next Friday, Oct. 22, and Lakeside will host Alcovy.
