Evans Middle students claim gunman at school in prank 911 call

Date: December 13, 2024

Three Evans Middle School students are facing misdemeanor charges after making a prank 911 call claiming there was an armed gunman at the school, authorities said.

The caller said a person dressed in all black, with a gun in their waistband, was in the seventh-grade hallway on Thursday. After making the call, the students ran into nearby woods. School officers quickly determined it was a hoax.

Dr. Michael Carraway, the school’s principal, confirmed that the students fabricated the threat and reported it to law enforcement.

District police and sheriff’s deputies responded to investigate. The students, two 14-year-old white females and one other student, have not been named. They are charged with misdemeanors for making a false 911 call and disrupting the school. The students were released to their parents.

Dr. Carraway sent an email to parents emphasizing the seriousness of such incidents. “Safety is our top priority, and we take reports like this very seriously. Parents, please talk to your children about the dangers and consequences of making threats,” he wrote.
