1 Tim 6:20-21
I am a person who has always liked science. I like to read about it. I like to study it. I just like science and the things which go along with it. The world puts a lot of stock in science. To them it explains everything. But to one who reveres God’s Word more than any other information, science has to take a back seat in authority. In First Timothy 6:20-21, Paul is warning his son in the ministry against falling for any kind of information which will cause him to err in his faith. In fact, Paul is saying that science (also translated “information”) will be in opposition to the truth of God’s Word. He gives Timothy some very valuable advice in order to protect him from many of the things that “science” will tell him. He doesn’t want Timothy to err in his faith.
As stated above, I am fascinated by a myriad of things that man has discovered. I want to know more about certain subjects that interest me greatly. One of the things that I love to study is the cosmos with all those galaxies and stars. Of course, one can hear many different opinions about all of this but no one really knows how it all started except God and those who take Him at His word when He states that He spoke it all into existence. Now, I know this will never satisfy a scientist or a doubter of God but, I would like for a scientist, any scientist anywhere in the world, to prove their theory of how things were formed. How did galaxies come to be? Well, to listen to the scientist, we learn that gigantic clouds of gas coalesced over billions of years and condensed into what we now see as a galaxy. These galaxies are thousands and millions of light years wide and long. They are huge. A light year is about five trillion miles. That’s how far light travels in a year at 186,000 miles a second. Too fast for me!
We are, according to the scientists, formed from star dust. Over the billions of years, all that dust which formed stars also wound up providing the needed things for man to evolve from nothing. God is left out of the picture. Comets would swing by every million years or so and leave certain elements which fell from their tails. These elements plus some from other external sources are what started life on earth. If you believe that I have a bridge in the Sahara desert I will sell you and make you a great deal on it. So, scientists great and small are looking for the answer as to how the physical universe came into being. But, what about those things that we know and experience that are not material? Where did they come from? Let me suggest a few of those things and think on them for a few minutes.
The Stability of Truth…”And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32
The stability of truth comes from God. He is pure truth and cannot be corrupted or compromised in any way. From the stability of God we understand that truth cannot be compromised in the least and still remain the truth. It is not flexible as is a lie. Let me give our readers a thought or two. An untruth feeds on deception. Another lie added in makes it even more of a lie; a bigger and more corrupt lie. It grows on deception…..add more lie, get a bigger lie.
Truth is not so. Add in even one microbe of lie and the truth is polluted and becomes an untruth. Add in a microbe of truth to a lie and it is still a lie. Add in one microbe of lie to the truth and it is no longer pure truth. Truth is corrupted by even one lie added to it. A lie grows and stays a lie even if one microbe of truth is added in. Truth has to be stable in order to remain the truth. It must be pure and unadulterated or it is not truth. Truth will always be unchanged (stable) if it is to remain the truth forever. That’s why our scripture declares that God is unchangeable. He does not vary in any way. He is Truth and the truth is settled in Heaven never to vary one whit. The Stability of Truth is a reality because God Himself made it so. It did not evolve. In fact, if truth evolved then it was changing as it evolved. Therefore, it is no longer truth. The truth of this universe was declared and is not a product of evolution.
Now where did that reality come from? Did it swoop down from the tail of a comet? How was it placed into humans if we evolved from star dust? Where did the concept and reality of truth come from? I can tell you that it was not a product of evolution or chemical reactions. Neither did it fall to the earth from a comet or asteroid.
The Emotion of Love…”And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor 13:13
Love is probably the most powerful emotion there is. It will cause a person to sacrifice anything, provide anything, and go to any measures to bless the object of that love. A person loves their mate and their children. They more than just “like” them; they love them. It is an internal emotion that is not physical or material. Even unredeemed people have an emotional attraction to others that we call love. Love bonds people together. When ones’ mate passes away, the love they had still continues. It overcomes even physical death. Love between two people cannot be destroyed. Think on it for a moment. Do you still feel love from those you loved that have gone on before you? Do you still love them? Sure, you do!
Love is an emotion which did not come into being by evolution. It was placed inside of us because the Bible says that God IS love and created each of us no matter what one will say. Where did the love you feel come from? How did it get placed inside of you? If God was not involved and we came from star dust, where did emotions, any emotions, come from? It didn’t come from the stars I can assure you. You cannot acquire love. It is a gift from God. He gave us the capacity to love in order that we could relate to Him in love; we could love Him back when He loved us.
The Existence of the Soul…”Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine; the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” Ezekiel 18:4
A person’s soul includes his personality, emotions, will, intellect and such things as their looks and personal demeanor. The soul is a person’s individual and unique way of conducting themselves. A person’s heart is where one’s spirit resides as well as the soul. The spirit placed by God in the heart instructs the soul as to how to express itself. And, the body follows the instructions of the soul. So, the body expresses what is in your spirit which has instructed the soul how to express itself using the body. My question is this: Where did the soul come from if not bequeathed by God Himself? Would someone say that it evolved from that cosmic dust? The soul is not something material that could evolve and neither is the spirit. So, a scientist that advocates the subject we are discussing would be saying that the body evolved and the soul and spirit just happened. Where did it come from? Did an evolved human just randomly develop a soul and spirit? There are some who would say that but upon what basis do they hold such an assumption? Did an intelligent human being just develop a soul and spirit after sensing that they needed one? The longer one questions all of this the more absurd their questions become. So, I want the scientist to tell me where the soul and spirit came from if they are going to deny God was not involved in the process at all. What would be the origination of the spiritual part of man if God did not place it in man? What materials could have evolved from something physical to something spiritual if there is nothing material to the soul and spirit? I think the scientist and evolutionist are barking up the wrong tree! In fact, I don’t think they even know which tree they are barking up. God gave a spirit and soul to mankind which He created just as the Bible states. As far as people of faith and our God in heaven are concerned, that’s the end of the argument.
The Presence of the Conscience…”How much more shall the blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” Hebrews 9:14
Scripture speaks of man’s conscience. It is what God has placed inside of us to guide us in our everyday lives. When we violate God’s will and word (sin), the conscience is pricked and we are shown what must be dealt with in order to be at harmony with God and man again. The conscience is our guide and it is the Holy Spirit which uses that conscience to warn us when we are tempted to do wrong. According to the scripture the conscience convicts of sin. It is purified by faith and the Blood of Jesus. It can be a good conscience or an evil ignorant one. It can be pure and it can also be seared such that it can’t even hear God speaking to it. That searing will cause it to be oblivious to the evil it should recognize. When the conscience is seared, it is evidence that a person has been turned over to a reprobate mind which enjoys sinning against God and wants others to join in (Rom. 1:32).
But, let’s ask this question. Where did the conscience come from? Here again, it is not material. It does not consist of anything material that the scientist says could evolve. The cosmic dust from which we are suppose to be made is material. It cannot evolve into anything spiritual. God gave us a conscience to warn us of sin and to encourage us to get away from it. Science can’t explain the Presence of the Conscience but God can.
The Awareness of Eternity…”For thus saith the high and lofty One who inhabiteth eternity whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15
Every human being that possesses a spirit, soul and body, also has one other thing common to all of them: Once God grants a spirit and soul, they will never die. The reason one cannot convince a person, especially young people, that they will never die is because they won’t. They are going to live somewhere for eternity. The question is where are they going to live? Heaven is for those who believed God and trusted Christ for salvation before they died and passed from this earthly realm. Hell is for those who rejected what God did for them by offering Jesus Christ on the cross. He died for our sins. God sends no one to hell. But they choose to go there by rejecting what God said about Jesus…that He is the Savior of the World. He died for everyone but not everyone accepts His death as payment for their sins. They disbelieved God and eternal punishment is the result.
But, again, where did the awareness of Eternity come from. The Bible is the source of our information about the existence of eternity and when we believe God, he gives us the ability to know about it in our spirit. Our spirit and soul are concerned about it. Eternity is not endless time as many believe. It is the absence of time. There is no time in eternity. Time is a “thing” that will someday be done away with. There will be no more use for it. The reason we are concerned about eternity is that God told us it exists.
I once visited a man in the hospital who was within a couple of hours of dying. I witnessed to him and invited him to accept Christ as his savior. He said: “Preacher, I ain’t ready to do that just yet.” Now, why did he say that with only a short time to live? I’ll tell you why. He thought he was never going to die. It is built into the souls of man the belief that they will live forever and that is right! A human being is going to live forever somewhere. Once a soul is granted, that soul will live forever. The thing that people must make sure of is that they will spend eternity in the right place: Heaven, with God, Jesus, the Holy Angels and all those who have gone on before us living in eternal bliss. But, there is another place of eternal existence and that is a place where God is not, Jesus is not, the Holy Angels are not and saved people are not. That eternal place is hell and no one in their right mind would want to go there. I encourage everyone to listen to what God says about eternal life with Him and make sure that you give your life to Christ without delay.
You have been given a choice which will determine where you spend Eternity.
Make sure you are anchored to Jesus Christ and not Science, So Called.
