Faith: Wisdom…A Necessary Element for a Good Life

Rev. Bill Harrell

Date: January 14, 2024

By the looks of things these days, it is evident that the world and our society as well, is reeling and rocking in every manner. No one seems to be able to define what should be done in order to make life stable like it was designed to be. The further we get away from what God tells us to do, the further this world will go awry. It is like a whirlpool in a river or in the ocean. The more it goes in an uncontrollable circle, the more it goes in an uncontrollable circle! It doesn’t seem to get better and it will finally suck someone or something down into its bowels.

The solution to it is this: just don’t get in its grip. The problem in these days is that people seem to run to destruction instead of avoiding it. A good dose of wisdom and understanding would help if people would seek it and direct their path with wisdom.

I just finished reading one of the best books I have ever read. It is filled with the wisdom that the world needs today! The title of this masterpiece is: How to be Wise and Successful. The author of this most inspiring book is a personal and long-time friend of mine: Dr. Warren W. Burnham. Warren spent thirty years as a minister in several churches. He was not only a good professional minister but he was an excellent pastor to people. He has a pastor’s heart and that comes from only one place: a genuine call to ministry by God Himself. With Warren, the “Proof is in the pudding.” You will not find long, boring, involved chapters in this book. Each of the 323 pages contains a short story from his life and ministry. You will find these stories both interesting and informative. You will also find that you will not be able to put the book down as each page will take you into the God-directed life of this man. You will be greatly entertained as well with humor from his life. The book is a story of how God directs and how He has given us instructions on being Wise and Successful. You will be shown the importance of scripture and its application to life. Examples of how God guides a life from young boyhood days until later life are very inspiring, entertaining and valuable to all.

There are two particular parts of scripture that are referenced many times in Warren Burnham’s book. The importance and centrality of Psalm 1 and the instructive nature of the Book of Proverbs. You will not have to guess how they are being applied in his book. That is made perfectly clear. You will thank me many times if you will purchase Warren Burnham’s book: How to be Wise and Successful. I have not enjoyed a book like this in many years and I have read a

plethora of books on various subjects. I encourage you to purchase a copy of this enjoyable, humorous and serious book. It will help you understand wisdom and understanding which God says are necessary for a proper life which is pleasing to Him.

If the leaders of our country had just a smidgen of wisdom and the understanding of how to apply it, this would be a much more livable society. The more secular our nation becomes, the further away from wisdom and understanding it goes. In fact, if these two virtues were not so important, why would God spend so much time telling us to have them. He also says that wisdom is not a mystery to us but that it comes only from Him. We can acquire it from Him and only from Him if we seek it and ask Him for it. But, in a society which rejects God and the Lord Jesus like ours does, there will be a dearth of Wisdom.

Many people are so secular minded that they do not understand what the Bible means when it talks of wisdom and understanding. Let me help some who will read this. Wisdom is the ability to know what should be done or said because they know it in their spirit. God gives it to them. Understanding is knowing how to apply the wisdom. One learns understanding from the scripture. God shows us in His Word how to apply what wisdom tells us is right. A person who lives in a right state with God exercising wisdom in his life will be like the man in Psalm 1. A strong tree planted by the everlasting waters. He has wisdom from the Lord and he exercises understanding in all his decisions. People in this world make their own decisions based on their desires and not what God wants. That is why these people are always in a turmoil and that is also why our nation and the world is on a self-destruct path travelling at a hundred miles per hour with their eyes closed.

I will explore this deeper in a future article. But, today, I am encouraging you to find out more about wisdom and understanding by reading How to be Wise and Successful by Dr. Warren Burnham. He has been my friend for many years and I congratulate him on an excellent book which will instruct and inspire those who read it. While I don’t try to sell anything in my articles, I do feel compelled to let everyone know that Warren Burnham’s book, How to be Wise and Successful is available on Amazon and Barnes a
