Sno-Cap is no longer coming to Columbia County – at least for the moment.

Brad Usry, the president of Fat Man’s Hospitality Group, confirmed the group was “at one point” in negotiations to establish another location for Sno-Cap Drive-In, the classically-styled North Augusta eatery, in Meybohm’s Evans Towne Center Building where Stay was.

While those plans did not materialize, Usry said the possibility of a Columbia County Sno-Cap location is a lasting possibility.

“It’s always an open discussion,” said Usry about the prospect.

This summer, Sno-Cap, which first opened in 1964, received $40,000 grant from American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Even though plans have changed for Sno-Cap, other plans are still in the works for the group. Fat Man’s Hospitality Group announced in early November that it had acquired the Sunshine Bakery space at 1209 Broad St. The pastry shop closed in 2020, after more than 70 years operating and a series of owners ending with Gene Gurley.

Aside from Fat Man’s vice president Havird Usury issuing a statement saying something “Smokin’ good is coming to downtown Augusta,” leading to speculation that the bakery will be reopened as a barbecue restaurant, the group is still reticent about what the new concept will be.

Brad Usry, however, has said he hopes for the new spot to be open by summer of next year.
