South Carolinians now have more time to seek federal disaster relief after Hurricane Helene.
Homeowners and renters in the state affected by the storm last fall now have until Jan. 28 to apply for assistance, FEMA announced Friday, per South Carolina’s request.
The previous deadline was Jan. 7. Georgia recently requested its own extension for federal assistance, but both the deadline for FEMA and SBA relief—the latter in the form of disaster relief loans—were extended by a month for Georgians, on Feb. 7.
FEMA is urging South Carolina residents to apply as soon as possible, noting also that contact and other information can still be updated, and documents still submitted, after the application.
CSRA counties such as Aiken, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda are among the 28 counties eligible for assistance.
FEMA assistance can include rental assistance, hotel reimbursement, funds for property and or vehicle damage, and other expenses due to the disaster. Farmers, farm employees and foresters might also be eligible for relief, such as the replacement of tools or equipment not covered by insurance.
